Although living in paradise is quite nice, San Diegans enjoy getting away to other top travel destinations. The best part of a vacation is, after all, coming home — especially when it’s to a top vacation destination.

  • 367,601 San Diegans took a cruise in the past three years.
  • San Diegans Top Travel Destinations within the continental United States are (in order of rank): Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, San Francisco, and Phoenix.
  • San Diegans also enjoy foreign travel, ranking at the top among National DMAs for those with three or more foreign trips in a year.
  • The top destinations for San Diegans traveling outside the continental United States are (in order of rank): Tijuana, Hawaii, Cabo San Lucas, the British Isles and the Far East.

Tourism: A top vacation destination

San Diego’s tourism industry accounts for a large part of the county’s economy. The internationally renowned, award-winning attractions bring in tourists from out of town — as well as San Diegans themselves. There is always something to do, somewhere to go and someone to see in San Diego, making it a top tourist travel spot.

  • San Diego hosted 31.6 million total visitors in 2008 — 15.4 million overnight and 16.2 million day visitors.
  • Tourists in San Diego spent $7.9 billion total in visitor spending.
  • The average daily hotel rate in San Diego is $138.89.
  • In 2008, 9.1 million air passengers arrived at Lindbergh Field.
  • 700,000 cruise ship passengers came to San Diego in 2007 in 238 cruise ships.
